English Unlimited C1 Advanced Coursebook
English Unlimited C1 Advanced is the top level of Cambridge’s English Unlimited course: a general English programme for advanced learners who no longer need the language simplified — who want it real, nuanced, and equal to anything they can think.
At C1 the work changes character: vocabulary becomes precision (the exact verb, the natural collocation, the register that fits the room), grammar becomes choice rather than correctness, and the texts and listenings are the authentic material of the English-speaking world, taught without apology.
It is written for advanced adult learners, professionals who work in English, and candidates approaching the highest examinations — a course that treats its students as the fluent speakers they nearly are, and closes the distance that remains.

English Unlimited built its reputation on goals: every unit opens with what the learner will be able to do, and its can-do architecture keeps even an advanced course honest. At C1 those goals are grown-up — argue a position with tact, summarise a complex text faithfully, catch the irony in a meeting, write the email that gets the answer. The course draws its material from the real world and its language work from a corpus-informed syllabus, so the phrases taught are the phrases natives actually reach for, idiom and understatement included. For self-teachers the level offers what advanced learners are rarely given: material that respects their intelligence while still teaching, page after page, the difference between English that is correct and English that is right. Teachers of advanced groups adopt it because its discussions run themselves; students keep it because the last ten percent of fluency is exactly its territory.

About This Book
English Unlimited is Cambridge’s goal-based general English course, and this C1 Advanced volume is its summit: the level where the training wheels of graded language come off and the course meets the learner in the real English world — with the guidance to survive and relish it.
What Learners Will Study
Precision Vocabulary
At C1, vocabulary is the syllabus: collocations, fixed phrases, phrasal verbs in their figurative lives, the near-synonyms between which all style lives, and the idiom that marks the insider — taught in the goal-led units as usable language, not lists.
Grammar as Choice
The advanced grammar agenda: inversion for emphasis, cleft sentences, advanced conditionals and modality, ellipsis and substitution — structures whose question is no longer ‘is it right?’ but ‘what does it do to the sentence’s force?’
Real Texts, Real Tasks
Authentic reading and listening from the English-speaking world, with tasks that mirror adult life in the language — evaluating, persuading, summarising, negotiating — and speaking and writing outcomes in every unit, because C1 is a performance level.
Key Features
The can-do goal structure is the feature: progress at C1, invisible to its owner, is made explicit unit by unit. The corpus-informed vocabulary syllabus is the second — English as it is used, not as textbooks imagine — and the authentic material the third: nothing in the level talks down.
Who This Book Is For
It is for advanced learners (C1) consolidating toward mastery, professionals operating in English, candidates for the highest Cambridge qualifications, teachers of advanced groups, and self-teachers who have outgrown intermediate courses and refuse to plateau.
How to Use This Book
Work units whole and slowly — at this level the discussions and writings are the learning, not the warm-up for it. Keep a precision notebook: every unit should yield ten phrases you intend to use, and use them within the week. Record yourself in the speaking tasks; at C1 the ear must become its own examiner. Classes can run the units as designed; private learners should add the course’s practice components for the drilling the level’s polish requires.
